PAOLO FIORELLINI: A VERSATILE ARTIST

Paolo Fiorellini is a Ligurian artist who took his first creative steps in the wake of figurative and expressionistic art. Since the 1990s he has adopted a more informal, material, often experimental language. Painter, sculptor, performance artist, Fiorellini can be compared to Transavantgarde and object language. When creating his works, Fiorellni doesn’t aim to imbue them with a specific meaning. From his point of view, an art work is something separate from the artist, it has a life of its own, expressing senses and meanings independent of the artist’s intentions. Attracted by the composition of materials, pigments and surfaces, he chooses the colors of his works based on the energy they absorb or emanate. His is a path of artistic research that tends to disorient the viewer.

Idols (Idoli) by Paolo Fiorellini

The “Idoli” series includes several installations of various sizes created over the last fifteen years. These are figures wrapped in aluminum armour, covered in a sort of metal armor that leaves nothing to be seen. They appear as warriors who have come here from an unknown place and from an unspecified time. Depending on the location in which they are positioned, the Fiorellini Idols can be large in size, real tin giants (for example if placed in an open urban space) or not. The fact is that anyone who finds themselves observing them or even just looking at them for a few seconds immediately grasps their indefinite space-time dimension. At that point, a reflection on human nature and the complexity of contemporary reality almost inevitably emerges.
